Big Android tablets
How big do you like your tablet? If you're designing a kid-friendly device that can be used as an easel, learning resource and game platform, the answer is probably: roughly Monopoly-board big.
No, inches isn't going to do it for you. You're going to want a device with a 20- or 24-inch display, like nabi's new Big Tab tablets, made by Fuhu. The Big Tabs are the biggest Android slates we've ever seen for sale (although there have been demos of significantly bigger models).
These gigantic slates come loaded with plenty of kid-oriented entertainment — like board games and storybooks — but are portable enough for a child to lug one of them from, say, the playroom to the kitchen table.
Based on Android, the tablets are loaded with a special UI (called the Blue Morpho OS overlay) that puts all the kid content front and center. The great thing about the size is that it easily allows two or more people can play at the same time.
The five modes include: Two Play, where you can play checkers, chess, backgammon and other games one-on-one. Game Room includes other games like air hockey and board games. Show Time includes a pack of pre-selected apps and games from Disney, Cartoon Network and Cookie Jar Entertainment. Story Time includes 35 interactive ebooks. Finally, Big Canvas lets kids explore their budding inner Rembrandt with virtual paints, crayons, pens and more.
In case you were wondering, yes, parents can push aside the locked-down child's UI (via a code) and just use the Big Tab for grown-up Android activities such as email, Netflix and using a proper browser. And unlike some other kid-oriented hardware, it's actually a pretty good device, spec-wise: it packs an Nvidia Tegra 4 processor, has 16GB of storage, and the display is either HD+ (1, 600 x 900) for the 20-inch model or full HD (1, 920 x 1, 080), for the 24-inch.
The sheer size of the Nabi tablets lets you easily play air hockey on the large 20-inch display.
We checked out the Big Tab and came away pretty impressed. Games like air hockey and Fruit Ninja were buttery smooth (gotta love that Tegra 4) and we could see kids enjoying the extra activities in Story Time mode. The drawing program could use a little more flavor, though — it was exactly like many other "basic" paint apps for iPad and other devices.
The Big Tab 20 and 24 go on sale this fall for $449 and $549, respectively. Sure, they're not the iPads your kids have been hounding you for, but at least these puppies make up for it in sheer size.
